Gerdau is currently seeking a Sr. Product Engineer for its Fort Smith, AR facility.

Position Overview
Provide technical expertise and support to both external (assigned customer base) and internal (operating areas, process engineers, sales, and technical service teams) customers. Work closely with process engineers in failure analysis, improving the quality of products, and elimination of problems. Interpret technical specifications and work closely with pricing quotations and product design process. Assist Quality Assurance and Lab Technicians in clarification of testing protocols and disposition of products. Assist plant in development and implementation of standards.

Responsibilities:
Coordinate and partner with Process Engineers with operational information and external data for the various departments and improvement of customer products.
Work closely in Price Quotations and Product Design from a processing and testing standpoint. Interpret technical specifications and coordinate with Sales and internally with Product Metallurgy and Customer Service Groups
Assist operating areas with all data sheets, diagrams, flow charts, and standards for correct and efficient operation of the equipment and process.
Review price quotes and customer specifications. And provide customers with PPAPs, lab reports, and corrective action/failure analysis information.
Set up optimal process routings to meet customer specifications and deliver expected product characteristics.
Provide preliminary engineering services for department projects and cost justification and/or cost savings.
The incumbent works with sales and technical service team to support the customers' needs.
Incumbent must stay abreast of current rolling and melting technologies to assist with recommending changes to effect continual improvement in the production process.
Provide mentoring and coaching to the Product Engineers and non-exempt personnel working in Product Metallurgy and Quality Assurance.
Assist with technical input for the computer control systems, such as QMOS, etc.
Review, develop, and improve operating procedures by partnering with operating departments and Process Engineers.
Coordinate with facilitators during routine operations, and assist in solving production problems by failure analysis in the operating departments.
Comply with company policies and procedures.
Assist with analysis and resolution of all customer complaints and claims.


Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in related field (i.e. Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering Technology, Materials Science or similar/applicable engineering field)
Master's Degree in related field preferred (not required)
5
years experience in Process or Product Metallurgy OR proven university materials based curriculum (Master's candidates will also be considered, commensurate with a high level research engagement in steel manufacturing and processing)
Strong skills/expedience with MS Office applications (MS Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint) required
Steel manufacturing experience strongly preferred (research in steel processing and/or steel manufacturing applicable)
Strong Presentation skills for technical presentations both internally and externally required
Some overnight travel for client visits required (approximately 10-15% of the time)
