Gerdau is currently seeking a Lab Technicianfor its Fort Smith, AR facility.
Responsibilities:
In this role, the Lab Technician will work with production and metallurgical staff to help ensure that quality product is being produced and shipped. Responsible to test and analyze samples, calibrate and maintain sensitive laboratory equipment and work in a timely fashion to support the daily production demands while maintaining consistency and accuracy within the work flow. Working conditions can be in extreme temperatures and the incumbent must be able to work off-shifts, overtime, and weekends.
Primary Functions:
Prepare samples and specimens (grind, cut, clean) taken at various stages in the steelmaking process, analyze on laboratory equipment, analyze results, record data and report results to appropriate team members; several heats of steel at various steps in the steelmaking process all require prompt, accurate results.
Operate band saw to cut bar samples into smaller pieces for further testing.
Place slices of bar samples into hot hydrochloric acid bath to reveal structure and imperfections. Visually inspect and compare to standards.
Maintain and calibrate sensitive laboratory instruments used for analyzing correct chemistry of various grades of steel manufactured (spectrometer, carbon-sulfur analyzer, etc.)
Ensure environmental compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations within the department.
Enforce environmental compliance to procedures and practices within the department.
Ensure department employees performing tasks, which can cause significant environmental impacts, are competent on the basis of appropriate education, training and/or experience.
Requirements:
Minimum of high school diploma (or equivalent) required (Associates Degree a plus!)
Must have open availability to work overnight shift (6PM-6AM,) with the possibility of moving to a rotating shift working days and overnight on a rotating schedule. Shifts may include holidays and weekends
1 year minimum previous experience working in a manufacturing and/or heavy industrial work environment preferably in lab or quality department setting
Intermediate skills and experience with MS Office applications (MS Word, Excel and Outlook)
Strong organization and record keeping skills and experience required
Strong multi-tasking and prioritizing skills required and priorities can change on a regular basis
Candidate must have strong communication and customer service skills in working with a variety of departments within the organization.
Prior database experience preferred (AS400 and/or SAP a plus)
Willing to work in varying work conditions including: heights, cold, heat, wet, noisy environment.
